Wild and beautiful is the Connemara – the Ireland's west coast and it has been home of Connemary ponies for centuries. It is sometimes thought that the Spanish horses of the conquistadores, perhaps shipwrecked off Ireland's treacherous coastline, were the basis for this sturdy and rugged mountain and moorland breed. It is likely that the small equines inhabited the landscape before and evolve into Ireland's only native breed.
When crosed with the Thouroughbred, the Connemara pony makes a superb competition horse.
